hey Guys,
I'll try to answer the follow up questions.
First my heads were prepared 10 years ago and they were done by Bob Sutcliff
before his retirement. They are not Falcon heads and i would have every
confidence in Mark's heads and i still have in Bob's work.
I do not remember if the seats were repalced, I do remember that he told me
that the guides were like new and they were not replaced.
I have always been awear that there was a history of Corvairs droppping valve
seats, but I think that the majority of the history is traced to the 140 heads
with the larger valves.
i can not think of any other warning signs and even after the seat had dropped
completely there was no additional noise besides the rough running condition.
I have tried auto fuel, I do not have fuel avaiable in the area without ethonal
so my test was with alcohol which I used for a month last summer. I really did
not like it to the point that I often wondered if something might happen. It
also took several tanks of 100ll to work the auto fuel out of the system and
return to running the way that I was used to.
Thanks to Jeff Scott for the MMO explaination. That was the best i have ever
seen for it other than being told i would die if I used it or I would die if i
didn't use it.
I have not decided what or how to make the repairs/replacement yet. I will be
checking the bottom end just for curiosity sake. But i do not beleive there is
any problem there.
As the start of another data point I intend to make good on a deal with Dan
Weisman at this time to send the 5th bearing assembly back to him for
inspection. It has over 200 hours on it and was the 2nd one to fly behind his
own. I willl leave any other reports on the 5th bearing up to Dan after this as
his technical expertise and knowlege of his componets are far superior to mine.
Hope this covers everything that was asked either privately or on the net.
Fly safe
