Beginning shortly after CC17 in Orlando, where I picked up my Roy's Garage Corvair motor, I have been modifying my KR2 to accept this beautiful engine, replacing my not so bad VW. It started around May 2010 with removing the header tank and building and installing wing tanks. That took almost a year. The purpose was to move the CG more aft to accommodate the heavier engine, make room in, and accessibility to, the area in front of the instrument panel and to get more range.
The next step began about 4 months ago. I stripped the VW off the firewall and cleaned it down to the wood. I then put a veneer over the swiss cheese firewall and filled all the holes from behind the veneer and put on a new sheet of stainless. Since then, I have been installing the engine, which was mounted for the final time ( I hope ) today. All the wiring except for the coil and center distributor are finished and as soon as I install the Ellison, she will be ready to start. Next weekend, I hope. This project has drawn a lot of interest from many of the builders, fliers, and visitors, at the airport. One of the RV guys spoke of it as the "most interesting" project on the airport. I am not sure that was a compliment, but I get many admiring comments about the Corvair engine and everyone is anxious for that first run. I will be at the CC in Barnwell, SC this year with the Corvair powered Black Bird.
