The original design has a fixed travel, a heavy landing can completely compress
the spring mechanism which then causes abrupt failure of the mount. The deihl
and grove springs cannot bottom out, so do not suffer this type of failure.

The original design was for a small vw engine turning a small prop on a plane
designed to operate on paved surfaces, it offered limited ground clearance, and
prevented low speed landings.

The later gear is higher and allows greater prop clearance and allows the
fitting of bigger wheels and three.
