Larry,
I have the same transponder. When you turn it on you should initially put
it on the STB (standby) position. The green light will illuminate steady for
twenty seconds while the unit warms up. Once the light goes off turn the
knob to on position and continue to ALT (altitude) position if you want to
transmit altitude. The green light will flash briefly every time it gets
pinged by a radar signal. You can test the unit by turning the knob to TST
(test) and if working properly the green light will illuminate and stay on
as long as you hold it in the test position.

Subject: KR> 78a transponder

Can anyone familiar with the King kt-78A transponder tell me if I'm
supposed to get any kind of indication when I turn the unit on? Does
the light only come on when it detects a radar signal? What if I
press the "Ident" button? I finished the install today and turned it
on while in the hangar and can't tell if it powers on or not. I
bought it used (yellow tagged) about 10 years ago and today is the
first time it has had power applied. It's been too long since I've
flown with a transponder and can't remember the operating mode but
I'm not getting a warm fuzzy feeling about this.
