Dave I recently replaced a direct drive starter on a 1982 revmaster motor with a Subaru starter (or at least one that looks identical) by making an adapter plate for it. Seeing that the newer Revmaster motors come out with this starter now I just bolted it up and turned the key. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the starter turns the wrong way around.
Now I wonder what vehicle the starter used by Revmaster comes from? In my opinion, if the direct drive starter you are looking for is the same as what revmaster used to use in the early days don't bother. They changed to the gear driven unit for a good reason. Any prolonged cranking with the old unit would allow the smoke to escape.
