I converted the 'holes' to inspection ports and made fairing covers for the
four holes. These inspection ports are now essential to get access to the
fresh air SCAT ducts and the wing tank fuel lines.
The Diehl gear leg fairings are quite wide at the base, so did not need to
do much fiber glassing at the spar brackets. I used a long drill bit with
an extension to drill the holes in the spar and then patched the holes in
the fiber glass stub wing skin using flox and micro.

Are there any issues with this, besides 'measure twice, drill once'?

I know the 'design' specifies that they go right next to the body of the
plane, but I'd rather not cut out the underside of my wings if I can
avoid it....

I'm doing a retract -> tri-gear conversion, and was thinking that since
there's this nice big hole already there on the back of the spar (where
the retracts go) I could just stick the brackets in that spot, and
minimize how much re-glassing I have to do...

Is there any benefit to having the gear closer to the fuselage, besides
a narrower ground track?
