My canopy is held on by a full-length hinge on the right (copilot) side, and a pair of marine-style hatch-fasteners on the left.
The gas-strut thing never occurred to me - right now the 'canopy support' 2 pieces of aluminum angle, bolted together in the middle by a single bolt so that when 'released' they fold into a V-shape to allow the canopy to close... There's a 3rd piece of aluminum that slides down over the joint to prevent it from closing when you want the canopy open...
