I just talked to Steve. As reported on the news, he's pretty sore, but OK. Steve was en route to the Gathering. The weather was degrading while he was crossing NM and he had to land in Albuquerque Double Eagle Airport (AEG) while a squawl line was passing. Winds were 28 Gusting to 35 at 70 degrees off from either runway. He simply ran out of options and had to attempt the landing. The little plane simply didn't have enough rudder to deal with that much of a crosswind component. Steve says he almost had it when he dragged a wing tip and things started going bad. He got whacked pretty good by his back pack that was tucked in the back of the canopy, so is pretty sore from that, but is otherwise OK. No doubt he'll be finding new bruises over the next few days. The plane is badly damaged, but rebuildable. Steve says he is contemplating buying a ticket to St Louis to attend the Gathering, then fly back to ABQ to rent a truck to haul the plane home to rebuild. So, We may see him at the Gathering this weekend and he'll have a story to tell.
