Your setup sounds a lot like my other KR2, I think it is more secure without a single point of failure like ZS-VYZ has (had). I have learned a lesson! I think in many cases the retracts can save damage to the plane, at least VYZ has a designed "weak link" on the fixed landing gear that will break before you damage the spar, in this case it worked perfectly so I will keep it the way it is.
