This may change my plans but has me wondering if there are a lot of KR-2 accidents or are there a lot of KR-2's that are simply not insured?

The KR does not have a good reputation in the insurance industry, primarily because most KR's use converted auto engines that they perceive to have poor reliability. Rates are based on claims and pay outs for a particular model or class, like tail wheel, tri-gear, retracts, engines used, etc.
For those wanting "motion hull" you might consider taking part of the risk yourself and only insure for material cost to rebuild, if that's possible.
Also, I agree with someone that mentioned Sky Smith out of Iowa. Big EAA supporter and great staff to work with. I've been with them since 1998.
