Go Henri! I have a Subaru EA81 Marcotte conversion that I’ve decided not to use, mostly due to weight. Experience around here has been that the Subaru conversions are quite reliable - once you work out the cooling and especially if your not trying to get 120% out the engine. Unfortunately, many are tempted to push all the power they can get out of them to claw their way back up that power to weight ratio.
My direct experience with Rotax engines dates back to before their conversion to CDI. At that time (1982 - 1987) the drifting points based timing would generally result in a seized engine in less than 20 hours if you didn’t stay on top of the timing. Since CDI, failures have become mostly oil injection or cooling based - and I think the two stroke 582 has become as reliable as any auto conversion 4 stroke with good maintenance and as long as the known issues are addressed. http://www.rotax-owner.com/en/support-topmenu/service-bulletins You’ll have an amazing performer powering your KR2 with a 582. If you happen to be popping through London, you could pick up this 670: https://london.craigslist.co.uk/ptd/d/rotax-670-experimental/6288032953.html Your collection of KR stats may be a great start to updating the performance spread sheet: http://www.krnet.org/kr-info.html I’d be happy to help with that. Maybe we could set up a google doc spread sheet that everyone could add to.
