I'll start this off by stating that we have great friends that have moved to
Fernandina Beach Fl. (FHB). From my airport (ASN) it's 293 nautical miles. We
drove it once and only once. The wife and I decided that she was just gonna
have to give the KR a try. Moving ahead, We have now made 3 trips down and back
and she absolutely loves the speed of flying. We can make the trip in around 2
to 2 1/2 hours depending on the winds. Memorial Day Monday we left FHB at 8:30
for the flight home. Put the wife in the plane, packed one carry bag in the
luggage area and let her hold the other in her lap until we reach altitude. We
taxied to runway 27, went over check list and engine run up and away we went.
The O-200 builds speed quickly and even with full fuel, the wife's 110 lbs.
plus luggage it lifted off smoothly and started the 100 mph climb to 3000 ft.
Once over the swamp I turned for home and climbed at 120 mph to 10,500 ft.
After moving some fuel from the wing tanks to the header tank, We moved the
bag that she was holding to the luggage area. With a full load and nose high
climb attitude the more weight you can keep forward the more stable she feels.
Beautiful blue sky with a few scattered white puffy clouds just below us and
the sweet sound of the Continental singing her song.... Man, It just doesn't
get any better than this.
