Mark Langford asked for input for the Question and Answer Session at the
Gathering. Since I won't be there in person, here is my input:
Pilot name? Sid Wood
KR-2 Where from? California, Maryland
From scratch. Anything else: Converted from retract tail wheel to tri-gear
before first flight. Diehl Wing Skin Kit, Diehl Tri-gear.
Lessons learned? KR-2 Plans have a 2-inch CG error designed into the
fuselage construction. Could be easily corrected in the “ladder” stage by
moving both forward and aft spar locations 2 inches aft. The published CG
numbers for the KR-2 are just plain wrong. Put the wing tanks in front of
the main spar. You can waist hundreds of building hours by making changes
to make it better after it has already been built especially when stuff is
not readily accessible; think about it really hard, make a specification
plan and stick to it. Nothing drags out project construction more than
specification creep.
Year built: Started in 1986. First FAA airworthiness inspection approval in
2013. Hours on aircraft since built: 1.1 hours
Length: Standard per plans, cockpit width: 34 inches per plans, wingspan 23
feet 4 inches Diehl wing skins, std airfoil: RAF 48,
Engine manufacturer: Great Plains VW, model 2180, carb: Zenith (Model # is
stamped on a metal tag bolted to the carb.), exhaust: Dragon Fly (4 pipes),
modifications: Stock Engine mount extended 2 inches from fire wall with
spacers per Jim Faughn. Electronic ignition. VW Beetle cooling shrouds.
Revmaster: oil cooler, oil pump, oil temperature control and mechanical fuel
pump.
Prop maker: Ed Sturgis, diameter/pitch 52X52, previous props flown: None.
Favorite prop: Only had one.
Fuel tank capacity: 16 gal total. Two welded aluminum tanks one each in
each outer wing panel. One Facet electric after the fuel selector valve and
in series with the engine fuel pump. Check valve in parallel with the
engine pump to pass fuel using the Facet pump when engine is not turning.
Left, Right and Off on the fuel selector valve. Gascolator on the firewall
has air blast cooling and drain accessible under the cowl.
Instrumentation: Dynon D10A with remote mag compass and backup battery,
Grand Rapids engine monitor, Digital Air/Fuel mixture meter, panel-mount 720
channel flip-flop comm radio, KTX transponder. One mechanical air speed for
night VFR backup. One mechanical wet compass for night VFR backup. Red and
white cockpit lights. Landing/taxi lights, wing tip navigation lights and
strobes. Three cigar lighter plugs for laptop, battery keeper, etc.
Control system: single center stick, push rod tube ailerons, heavy duty
Bowden cable in series with push rod for elevator, mechanical Nyrod elevator
trim tab, electric three-position flaps.
Wheel/tire size: Tri-gear, 4.00-11 Lamb mains & 3.5 Lamb nose, homebuilt
wheel fairings, RR disc toe brakes, very effective.
Rudder pedal mounting: top hinged per Larry Flesner. Canopy maker: Stock
KR-2 RR, Forward hinged & balanced with air/oil struts. Converted to single
place cockpit. Cabin heat and defrost air ducted from oil cooler.
Longest cross country flight so far: None, still in Phase 1.
