I modified my tail similar to what Mark described below and I would recommend it. Controllability, stability and response was good. I have cross winds at my airport often. I could land my tailwheel airplane in about 20 mph crosswind without excessive distress.
I used carbon fiber for weight and strength and I liked the way it handled.
