I forgot the most compelling reason to ditch the retracts....you might
just land with the gear up! Been there, done that!
But on the other side of the coin, in the event of a forced landing in a
field full of beans or even short clover, fixed gear can nose you over
instantly on landing, potentially ending with a rollover, but with
retracts folded in, you just skid along on the belly and minimize the
damage. I've done part of that too....the instant nose over in short
clover. I was told the field was fine to land on, by a non-pilot and
optimistic guy. As soon as I touched down it immediately nosed over,
filling the carb with dirt and killing the prop. I thought it was going
all the way over (it felt like at least a 45 degree angle), but
fortunately it didn't. Another prop purchased!
Chances are much higher that you'll land with the gear up than nose over
in an emergency field landing, however.....
