That's also the technique I use.  When you put the two wheel halves together they don't quite touch and if you hit the outer edge of the wheel at a minimum of three different points with the palm of your hand you should hear a metallic clicking if the tube is not pinched.  After the wheel is bolted together inflate / deflate the tube two or three times to allow the tube to seat itself without being in a pinch.  Beyond that it is probably just luck.
