When there are changes in the packer, there are a few of my wishes: 1) setting compression level even for tar.gz 2) .a (ar) support 3) Especially for 7zip it would be useful to set the used memory (-md parameter, see for example http://amp.iem.pw.edu.pl/doc/p7zip/MANUAL/switches/method.htm for the list of parameters (older version) ). If someone has for example 128 MB of RAM, default level 7 (new 7zip uses 16MB dictionary by default in this level, which requires 188MB only for the binary tree - unusable for bigger data due to swapping), the same for 256MB RAM and level 9 with 32 bit dictionary (the tree requires 372MB). But the users of the computers with small memory may (or I do ;-) ) want to use compression level with better compression ratio and slower times, without the enormous slow down caused by swapping. In the opposite, users with Gigabytes of memory may want to get better ratio with same packing time. Just my two cents.
