At least this item is already on my ToDO list, maybe even as part of
porting the AST "unified" pattern matching code to the Solaris libc...

One remaning issue is Don's answer to the question in
http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/ksh93-integration-discuss/2008-January/005856.html
- we can only do this if the use of multibyte characters is "allowed" in
this case... otherwise we can throw the idea into the trashcan and make
the current "workaround" for "libc does not like multibyte characters
for some numeric seperators" in
http://cvs.opensolaris.org/source/xref/nv-g11n/g11n/src/locale_src/base/ar_SA.UTF-8.localedef
the permanent fix.
