The malloc man page says: "suitably aligned for any use". I think that means the largest alignment that might be needed. I think there are some sparc 64-bit instructions that require 16 byte alignment? I'm not sure, maybe VIS instructions. I used to know this in my RTC says, but now I've forgotten it all. Sorry. Of course you could read/debug/disassemble the source for malloc and find out.
