No, it simply contains "." (".." would refer to the file or dir).
While not implemented, the API would support extended
attributes of extended attributes, so $PWD above couldn't
always be an absolute path, I think.

If I remember correctly, it was an informal message in a
newsgroup or mailing list that it was for a (Sun internal?)
product similar to Samba. Can't find the message, though.
