Just to be clear you don't need to be using an overlay network with Kubernetes. Everything on the cluster does need to be on the same network <http://kubernetes.io/docs/admin/networking/#kubernetes-model> and you can achieve this using an overlay or many other methods like BGP announces or host gateways.
