Is the upgrade path for GKE experiencing a number of issues at the moment ?

Examples:

1) The last 2 times I tried to manually upgrade or install from scratch and
specified the version it failed and said it was an invalid version. This
was even though I did this after the last scheduled zone the new version
was due to be available in as posted on the GKE Release Notes forum. The
Release Notes are therefore incorrect in the dates that they say the new
version will be available.

2) I know its only a beta feature but I've never see an auto-upgrade occur
although I'm constantly//annoyingly reminded that I should do an upgrade
(manually).

3) When our masters where on 1.7.5-gke.1 and our nodes are on 1.7.5 again
we are constantly//annoyingly reminded that I should do an upgrade
(manually). See below, but we suspect that "-gke.1" is a special internal
version, just for master's and can not be used on nodes. If this is the
case then there is no upgrade available.

4) So whats with these "-gke.1" versions added onto the Kubernetes version
? We seem to get them after Google chooses to upgrade the master. I could
find no mention of them in the Release Notes and on occasion I've tried
using them in building a new cluster we get "invalid version". Which makes
us think something is broken in GKE land ?
