I can confirm this with Kubuntu Dapper. It seems that "Create New | Text Document, Presentation Document etc." produce KOffice documents. Many of us do not have KOffice but OpenOffice.org instead. -- New install of kde for kubuntu has Invalid create new items https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/25665
