I ended up switching back to Evolution, so I'll have to build debug packages when I have some freetime.
A workaround to the problem was to copy all messages to a single folder in Evolution, then export them to a mbox file, then import them into Kmail. It worked then. An oddity I discovered was that when I was re-importing the mail I had received from Kmail to Evolution (did so by creating a folder using the mbox format instead of the "mail folder", then imported that file into Evolution) I had many mails that were blank. All of my mail was still there, but lots of messages were now present that didn't have any content...no sender, no subject, no time, no body.
