Can not confirm on KDE 3.4.3 on Kubuntu Breezy. What version of KDE are you using?
Oh, and "align to grid" doesn't equal "automatic ordering", at least not in KDE 3.4.3. -> You have to manually select "Line Up Horizontally" or "Line Up Vertically". (Sidenote: I recall being able to set icon spacing somewhere in KDE configuration on another system, but in 3.4.3 on Kubuntu I seem to be unable to find such an option.
