Here is the depandancies list for kmplayer-base, used by both the player and
the konqueror's plugin :
Depends: kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.2), libaudio2, libc6 (>= 2.3.4-1),
libfontconfig1 (>= 2.3.0), libfreetype6 (>= 2.1.10-1), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.0.2),
libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.10.0), libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 (>= 0.10.5),
libgstreamer0.10-0 (>= 0.10.4), libice6, libjpeg62, libpng12-0 (>= 1.2.8rel),
libqt3-mt (>= 3:3.3.6), libsm6, libstdc++6 (>= 4.0.2-4), libx11-6, libxcursor1
(>> 1.1.2), libxext6, libxft2 (>> 2.1.1), libxi6, libxine-main1 (>= 1.1.1),
libxinerama1, libxml2 (>= 2.6.23), libxrandr2, libxrender1, libxt6, zlib1g (>=
1:1.2.1)

So kmplayer depends on both gstreamer and xine.
Concerning the default engine, on a propper install, the default engine in use
is xine, not gstreamer.Here is the content of /etc/kde3/kmplayerrc :
[General Options]
Show Statusbar=true
Show Toolbar=true
pipesource=xine
urlsource=xine
vcdsource=xine

If it doesn't for you, you should remove kmplayerrc file in your
profile, since this isn't the default.
