Personally, I would prefer to use only kmail, even if Kontact is
installed. Kontact insists on starting this reminder daemon (even when
configured not to, quite annoying), and I don't use anything in Kontact
besides the mail component. Basically, it's very annoying to have to run
kmail  from the Alt-F2 box (or remove the NoDisplay=true from
/usr/share/applications/kde/KMail.desktop), even when kmail is
configured to by my default mail client.
