I have found a workaround/solution for this serious problem. It is not sufficient to fill out the fields within the "Identity" page - rather, the information has to be in the "Identity" tab of the newsgroup server properties.
This is a serious bug and should be resolved, because this behavior is specific to Kubuntu.
