I had to do the same as you did. This is all going to change hopefully
with the work in KDE 4. As for the KDE 3 stuff with KPilot, it seems the
work has been at a standstill for some time now due to the developers
not having enough hardware to do testing with. You can always check out
http://www.kpilot.org to see if you can get any information out of
there.

As for loading visor when a Palm is connected, it sounds feasible to me,
however I am not sure 100% the correct way about doing this. I don't
think all Palm devices use the visor module for one, and it isn't only
Palm devices that use visor, there are a lot of legacy PDAs that use the
visor plugin, such as my old Sony Clie.
