I have a Compaq Presario M2000 with separate volume up/down/mute keys.
I'm running Kubuntu 7.04
If I open KMixer and change the master balance, and then use the volume up/down
key - it seems to take the volume from the left channel and assign it to the
right channel - upsetting the balance.
To reproduce, it's easiest to observe with alsamixer open in a konsole, as it
interactively shows volume changes from other sources.
1) Open alsamixer
2) Click on the speaker icon and bring up the mixer.
3) Change the balance to all the way to the right
(you will see in alsamixer that the left channel goes down to 0, while right
remains at the same volume)
4) Press the volume up key.
(you will see the left volume increases, but the right volume is dropped to the
same level as the left channel)
