Well, the indicator widget should be added via the default settings (one
thing more using up space in my panel :-( )

After the latest updates to kopete and kde-pim packages (including the
indicator libs), I understand now why the system tray icon is generally
not needed any more. Even if there are no messages to indicate, the
indicator widget shows e.g. kmail or kopete if it's running. And
selecting this entry brings the application into focus. So basically,
the system tray icon is not necessary to bring the main application
window into focus.

But it does not work as intended at the moment (that's why I linked the
indicator widget to this report). When the application (I tested it with
kopete and kmail) is not only minimized to the panel but minimized to
the system tray (so that there is no entry in the task manager), then
the indicator widget is not able to bring the application into focus.
