I installed Kubuntu on many different PCs/laptops and I have noticed 2 problems destroying out of box Kubuntu experience.
1) With "Window active state change transitions" window decoration animation, desktop effects are choppy on mostly graphic cards/graphic drivers. Yesterday I installed Kubuntu on my brother's brand new pc with high end amd gpu and I was stunned to see that desktop effects are choppy with default settings (with this oxygen animation turned on). Screenshot of oxygen settings: http://www.dodaj.rs/f/35/iS/4mtkHq33/snapshot105.png KDE bug report: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=226182 It's marked "Resolved upstream". Well, I am experiencing this bug since this animation was introduced (KDE 4.4) and it still isn't fixed. Disabling only this animation by default will greatly improve desktop effects on affected systems. It is night and day difference. 2) I think that font rendering is not good enough by default. I found that the best settings are: use anti-aliasing: enabled, use sub-pixel rendering: RGB, hinting style: slight. I think with these small changes to Kubuntu defaults, average users and newcomers to Kubuntu will have better out of box experience. Experienced users will be able to tweak Kubuntu (KDE) setting to suit their needs regardless of these potential changes to Kubuntu defaults. At the end, I want thank everyone involved in making Kubuntu reality. You guys rock!
