I know this discussion lasted so long, but I would like to add some more comments on welcome screen. People like to see some things only the first time and to be let configure the settings on first-run. It is very good letting them to choose simply things.
I uploaded three pics from welcome screen of Pardus. It basically explains the usage and welcomes users. There are more pages but this is just to give explanation. Clicking on one more "X" on a window will not make people bored or angry about Kubuntu. I have no idea programming under KDE, but if there are no interests in programming on this, but this might be considered for future; I would like to help you if possible...
