FWIW, not using drivers that are not from the ubuntu archive would
help with that as well :P

That seems rather odd, even if it crashed you'd get a crash handler I
think. There may be logs somewhere in /var/log

More like an upstream bug. Both kid3.desktop and kid3-qt.desktop are
being installed but -qt doesn't have NotShowIn=KDE (or some similar
thing to ensure only one shows up in KDE...). Not sure why it has two
desktop files to begin with TBH.
