I was hit with that after upgrades today. One of the packages updated was SDDM - perhaps that update should be examined. Yesterday's updates pulled in systemd for me with no problems. (I had waited a few days for systemd in case of problems.) On a related note, I upgraded my old laptop running 14.10 + next ppa today. I used the advice we're now publishing here: https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Packages#Kubuntu . I updated the advice since `do-release-upgrade` doesn't work, and will not until release. `kubuntu-devel-release-upgrade` works. Errors and failure were reported on the upgrade, and I was unable to shut down since upstart had been removed. After I shut it off with the power button, I got the weird blank screen + starting system #, but Riddell's advice above worked, plus I had to startx. Once the system had actually booted into KDE, everything looks tops. Even my wireless turned on automatically once kwallet got its password. \o/ So we've got a few things to fix before release, but overall, things went well.
