Military officials in the Galela, Halmahera area of the Moluccus Islands
(Maluku) have confirmed the findings of hundreds of Muslim bodies following
the aftermath of a massacre perpetrated by the Christian groups.
The confirmation was narrated by Reuters in its report Monday night quoting
a local military source." The bodies were buried in a mass grave on Sunday.
Most bodies were found inside the mosques (masjid - ed.)), roads, and burnt
out buildings" according to the Reuter source.
Many reports regarding the hundred of deaths have emerged over the past
several days with the number of deaths claimed to be around 3000. This is
the first confirmation obtained from an independent source apart from the
groups involved in the conflict.
The report also quoted an information obtained by phone from Mursal Ahmad
Tomagola, a social worker, who said that most bodies had been burnt and
were badly decomposed presenting obstacles for identification procedures.
The bodies were taken from the three local masjids.
"Most bodies inside the masajeed had been burnt too," said Mursal.
Initially, Reuters identified the perpetrators of these brutal killings
being "unidentified people". However, it then reported that the victims
were the results of attacks by the Christian groups the previous week.
