An open letter to: William Jefferson Clinton,
President of the United States.
Dear Mr. President,
Please ask, or have someone ask President Wahid of
Indonesia....
Why the Laskar Jihad, a muslim extremist group which
publicly extolls the genocide of Christians, is
permitted to have military-style training camps in
Indonesia...
Why the Laskar Jihad is allowed to own and publicly
display automatic weapons when all other citizens of
Indonesia are denied the right to bear arms...
Why the Laskar Jihad was allowed to ship over ten
thousand mercenaries to the Maluku Islands when
President Wahid said that they would be prevented from
doing so...
Why those in Indonesia who have paid to train and
equip tens of thousands of mercenaries and ship
thousands of automatic weapons as well as millions of
rounds of ammunition to Maluku, have not been
identified and charged with any crime? And where did
so many weapons come from?....
Why, when President Wahid said that the Laskar Jihad
would have to leave Maluku within one month, many
months later their number has increased many-fold and
they, along with members of the Army, have continued
to murder ("ethnically-cleanse" by their own
statements) Christians while also burning churches and
institutions of higher learning.....
Why, in spite of the need for humanitarian aid for
tens of thousands of refugees, have no safe corridors
been provided for the delivery of food and medicines -
in spite of repeated requests by the United Nations
and other international aid agencies?
The answer to all these questions seems obvious:
either President Wahid is a lying bigot OR he has
little or no control over the army. The latter most
certainly is the case.
The "Suharto Generals" still hold great power and it
seems they have, in fact, not given up their desire to
control the country. They seem obviously dedicated to
putting an end to democratic reform and reimposing an
elitist/military dictatorship.
Until the army is subservient to the people, military
and economic aid (except humanitarian) should be
witheld from Indonesia.
If not, we, in The United States, are complicit in the
genocide and ethnic cleansing that the Indonesian army
is condoning and even conducting in many parts of
Indonesia.
The good people of Indonesia, of all faiths, deserve
freedom from the corruption and oppression that
colonists and greed-mongers have subjected them to for
over three hundred years. They have been forced to
live without a legal system and basic law enforcement
for so long that self-justice has been easily
manipulated into spiraling acts of retribution in many
places in Indonesia, especially Maluku.
It seems that there are those who hope that, with
enough chaos, the army, and the wealthy elite who do
business with them, will again receive the power to
rule unimpeded.
For the sake of the people of Indonesia please demand
reforms before we finance groups that disregard basic
human rights.
