> Text: Roth Speech on U.S. Policy Towards Asia, January 11, 2001 > (Assistant Secretary of State sees new challenges for ASEAN) (7140) > > The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be facing new demands as some of its members wrestle with "formidable political challenges at home," says Stanley Roth, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs. > > In a January 11 speech at the Asia Society Washington Center, Roth said that while the "intellectual commitment to multilateralism" remains among ASEAN members, the ability of some to look beyond their immediate borders has diminished."
