On rereading this post, I find that I forgot to mention my use of -no-reboot. As I wish the VM to exit on a reboot attempt (and "kvm --help" documents -no-reboot as "exit instead of rebooting"), I am using said flag.
If I leave out -no-reboot, "reboot -f" causes kvm to exit rather than hang.
