If it cannot use hw virtualization it tells you: Could not initialize KVM, will disable KVM support > I ran /usr/bin/qemu as I didn't have /usr/local/kvm/bin/qemu like the HOWTO > mentioned (as I didn't compiled the kvm bundle myself...). Under debian the executable is called kvm; I believe that it's the same under ubuntu. Run dpkg -L kvm and see what has been installed.
