Ah - the penny drops.  :-)

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 which seems to be using libvirt 0.4.0. I'm not really fussed about doing source build/installs so looks like I will have to wait until Intrepid is out which has libvirt 0.4.4 as part of it.
