Thank you very much Markus. We were literally two minutes ahead, we've added a tty to -monitor so that a function key exposes it; actually, this is better than the original qemu monitor. So now it's (say) -monitor /dev/tty2 and a simple ctrl-alt-f2 exposes a momitor screen.
