Most (maybe all) phones come with crossover cords, but unless your 2500 set
is ancient, the cord won't matter.

Since the mid 1980s, when phones became retail products, they've been
equipped with "polarity guard" circuits so they would work even with
reversed polarity.

Before that time, phone companies often deliberately reversed polarity for
customers who were not paying for touch-tone service, but were connected to
central offices that automatically provided touch-tone. That way, if someone
had a stolen touch-tone phone, and installed it according to the normal
color code, it would not dial out. Some kids, however, were smart enough to
reverse polarity and enjoy freebie touchtone.

Later on, most phone companies stopped charging extra for touchtone.
