I have not seen this problem with the KXTA's I have installed or worked on. My vote is that you are safe to buy another one.
However, should you want to upgrade, the KXTD will support the 7300 phones. As the trainer from Panasonic regarding phones and the newer systems, "They are always backward compatible for easier upgrades/integrations". Just not the new KXT308, though.
