Tim, Before getting too involved, be sure the client is aware of legal concerns. He will probably need to notify employees that calls may be monitored, and in some states he would have to let the callers know that calls are monitored as well.
On the kxtd there is no way to perform "silent observation" unless you add extra equipment. Cheap way: If you have just a few co lines, you could wire them up directly through something like a Radio Shack tape recorder adapter. To be real clever you could wire the audio back in to a spare co line and only put those co buttons on the boss's phone. Then he can choose the spare co to listen to the real co. More advanced: Viking makes a "silent observation" unit, SO-24. It can connect to up to 24 co lines and gives one ouput. Through the output you can connect a monitoring phone or to a spare co line. This unit lets you select which co you want to listen to, it has a recording output that you can remotely turn on as well. Think $500 or so. More advanced: Voice logging via pc, such as voicelogger.com. I just hooked up a small (4-co) configuration for a limosine company. It lets them monitor and record all calls, do searches for old calls, and if they wanted, it can be accessed via their network or even via the internet. Think at least $5000+.
