Here's an odd finding.

(BCC to Mike: Yo, check this out, speaking of tone-plans, but don't reply to this listmail, reply to me directly or we'll talk tomorrow)

KXTDA-200, USA version, I'm in the process of upgrading from 1.0 to 1.1. I get to about the midpoint of the process, after the new PMPR file is uploaded from a desktop file where I keep it.

I saw a test phone (7633) screen illuminate, and it came on with date in UK format (07 Oct).

So I go off hook and hear a dial tone that sounds like either UK or Japan (single frequency, sounded like approx. 350 Hz, nice clean sine wave). In the normal case with these machines, the choice is either USA standard precise tone, or a "distinctive" tone that sounds like a continuous purr, using the same tone as the ring tone. (Personally I prefer using the latter as it distinguishes internal from external dial tone, prevents tragic misdialing if someone needs to dial 911.)

Hmm, says I, something is different here!

Dialing 9 did not get an outside line, instead it rang extn. 101. Dialing 0 did likewise. Dialing a deliberate wrong extension number to get busy tone got me something a little different than USA standard precise tone.

Dialing 7 got me an ARS tone and the word "Line" in the display. However *this* ARS tone was none of the above tones. Instead, it was very much like the dialtone used on an old Rolm switch, or used on the old Panasonic KXT-123211-D switch. To my mind that sounded Japanese, if only by association with a machine we installed many of in the old days.

So what have we got here...?

A few steps later, the programming tool told me to replace a file, which I did, thereby bringing back the USA default settings.

Is it possible that somewhere in the middle of upgrading to 1.1, the USA version of the system goes through a step where it becomes Japanese or British for a while? Or was that merely a case of me "looking in the oven before the cake was fully baked, and seeing a tray of mush"?

Everything seems to be working fine now, so this isn't a "repair enquiry," just curiosity. Anyone know anything about this?
