Make sure your pairs are heavy enough.  If it's a long run on 24AWG,  you 
need to double the pairs up. That or you got something wet or  corroded.

I am  pretty far from this KXT 824 installation. The customer indicates the
front  doorphone makes a "Dialtone" sound when pushed,but no ringing or
indication  on the display on any of his phones.
There is a gate intercom also that  dials the phone number,but the  front
door uses a standard Panasonic  Doorphone interface. I have a recollection
that it worked normally at one  time.Not sure what is going on
