I am not sure if someone else has already suggested this BUT if the unit can
support local programming with a PC it can be modified to do it remotely if
you are prepared to do a few minor adjustments. I am almost certain that the
616 has this facility, if not, please disregard the rest of this unless you
are interested for the 1232 systems!
Briefly, you need to add a relay over the pits/normal/EIA switch in such a
way that when the coil contacts close, the effect is to put the unit into
the EIA position.
Now attache a cable taken from the programming port and poke it into a modem
set to Auto Answer. The signal to make the relay contacts close is derived
either from an inline current sensing relay on the phone line connected to
the modem OR directly from one of the modem LEDS (eg: CD or OH) (buffered
with a transistor - and also fitting diode in reverse over the relay coil
to stop back EMF zapping the transistor).
So, if a call comes in on the modem, the modem auto answers. As soon as this
occurs, the relay closes and the PBX is switched into EIA mode and the link
is established. As soon as the modem drops the line, the unit is switched
back into normal operation.
If you then use a modem at the other end connected to whatever program you
wish to use programmator? then the commands should go down the line to your
remote system.
There may be other more elegants ways to make it work, but this system is
quite effective - -though does require a couple of minor modifications (as
mentioned above), one to the PBX and one to the modem.
