My solution for the past few years, whether it be analog or digital, is to use a device called the STICK which sells for about $95.00 from Eastern Distributors.  This gets wired to the CO line before anything except a surge protector.

From this there are two voice taps [phone system and TAD], FAX and Modem.  This allows the modem to run at the full speed of the phone connection capability.

The real nice feature is that it can be custom programmed as to number of rings to answer for each port and tones to send to be able to remote access.  This programming is done free by calling an 800 number from a device plugged into the STICK and the company programs it for you while you are on the line. If also gives a little security to your modem connection so that if you leave your computer on line for remote access, the person calling has to know the code to place after they dial the modem number so that the STICK will direct to the modem port.

With the STICK, once any device plugged into it is in use, the other devices on that line get a busy signal.
