We have been using them for years at Bell
Atlantic/Verizon. The gel will prevent connection of the mod plug about
30-50% of the time out of the box (lots of repeats on new installations).
I have seen them corrode also. They may be of some help, but they are by
no means fool-proof....
We usually dig out most of the gel with an
orange stick before installation to cut back on
repeats........

Suttle makes phone jacks that contain a
polymer gel that protects the contacts from corrosion, whether plugged or
unplugged. http://www.suttleonline.com/corroshield.html
Might be worth a try . . .
